The Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection at the University of Lodz conducts research ranging from fundamental and methodological studies to applied research. The scientific interests of its academic staff focus on three broad areas: (1) the biological environment, including its condition, conservation, sustainable use, and transformation; (2) the structure and function of plant, animal, and microbial cells; and (3) biomedical and biotechnological sciences.

The Faculty is recognised as one of Poland's leading centres for biological research. It has been awarded the highest scientific category (Category A), reflecting the high quality of its research. In the national evaluation conducted by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education in 2017, the Faculty was ranked first among biological faculties in Poland in terms of research potential.

The Faculty comprises 25 departments, the Biohazard Prevention Centre, the University of Lodz Natural History Museum – Centre for Nature and Environmental Education, the Centre for Digital Biology and Biomedical Sciences – Biobank Łódź, two independent laboratories, three field research stations, the Teaching and Experimental Garden, and five Faculty Administrative Units. The departments are organised into five teaching institutes, whose primary role is to coordinate the Faculty's educational programmes.
