Research areas:

  • Taxonomical and ecological diversity of cyanobacteria and algae.
  • Taxonomy and ecology of cyanobacterial from relatively natural habitats, under human impact. Traditional and molecular study of cyanobacterial.
  • Modern taxonomy of diatoms (Bacillariophyta) using the Scanning Electron Microscopy.
  • Algae as indicators of various environmental features and their use in biomonitoring.
  • Biological assessment of water quality (springs, rivers, lakes, peat bogs, post-mining reservoirs) based on diatom assemblages.
  • Influence of active compounds and biocides on the development of cyanobacterial and algal biofilms.
  • Cyanobacteria and algae as a corrosive factors of building materials and historical objects.
  • Diatoms in paleoecological research.
  • Algal assemblages in different types of water ecosystems in Poland and Europe.

Range of expertise, comercial and business offer

  • Water quality monitoring (springs, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, peat bogs) and the assessment of environmental disturbance caused by natural and antropogenic factors.
  • Ecological status assessment of aquatic ecosystems using diatomological analysis according to recommendations and principles of surface water bodies monitoring in Poland.
  • Phytobenthos and phytoplankton analysis in various water ecosystems.
  • Studies of photosynthetic microbes biodiversity (cyanobacteria and algae) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Cyanobacterial and algae blooms – taxonomical identification, toxicological hazard assessment and blooms dynamics forecast.
  • Assessment of anthropogenic transformations of aquatic ecosystems on the basis of cyanobacteria and algae diversity and development of recommendations to minimize the anthropogenic pressure in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
  • Biodegradation and biodeterioration threat of historic objects and monuments caused by photosynthetic biofilms, characterization of the degree of biological contamination of building materials and preparation of recommendations for conservation practices to minimize  the risk of biodegradation and biodeterioration of cultural heritage.
  • Research of the biocide activity of active compounds, biocides and metal nanoparticles against photosynthetic microorganisms (cyanobacteria and algae), that cause biodegradation.
  • Juridical expertizes, supports by comparative analysis of diatoms: determination of the place and circumstances of death, assistance in assessing the circumstances of crimes. The use of diatoms in forensics.
